Who am I? What is my relationship to media?

My name is Jeffrey Eng. I am a computer science major, so for me the media I focus on is generally geared towards technology or conspiracy theories. It was a couple of years ago; maybe during my senior year of high school, I developed a crazy obsession over technology. Majority of the time I am reading articles on engadget.com, technobuffalo.com, PCMagazine, or anything related to technology. My English teacher in high school, introduced me to all these crazy conspiracy ideas the media uses to brain wash its audience, because of him every time I see something major on the news there is some alternate agenda behind it.

I am extremely disconnected from mainstream media. This is most likely due to the fact that I have pretty much deviated away from anything that is popular, in other words I enjoy being an outsider. In high school I was labeled as the guy without a MySpace, or Facebook (even now I am still that guy). To me social networking sites is haven for potential stalkers, since you pretty much post your whole life on the Internet. Sure, there are privacy settings but how far does it go to protect your identity. Now Facebook wants to incorporate a facial recognition system in their site to make it easier for you to find your friends, yes, you can opt out of this feature, but your photo will still be in their facial recognition system. Another reason I do not follow mainstream media, is because it tends to be completely filled with stereotypes of people. A majority of Americans subconsciously accepts what the media portrays about people; because of the racist ideologies that existed they have developed into stereotypes that the media uses as a form of subliminal entertainment.

In other words my relationship to media is to deviate from anything that’s popular, and just focus on my interest in technology and conspiracy theories. Since a majority of the time the stuff that is popular is generally something that the media is using to distract people from what is really going on in American society and within its government, at least that’s my opinion. As my English teacher believed, the media is designed to brainwash its viewers making everyone ignorant of reality.
