Who i am and my Relationship to Media

I'm the typical 4 semester college student strolling down the 'undecided' path of life. I put happiness of myself and others above all, and am always out seeking fun and excitement. As a proudly born and raised New Yorker, I can admit that my life is formed and shaped by American society and culture. I'm the typical media-supporting American, and until this morning, I didn't even know it.

This past winter, I've agreed on taking my first step in getting my life in order; upgrading to a Google smartphone. My severe case of BBM withdrawal was buried deep under my anticipation of a refreshed social life. Having my weekly calendar, search engines, news columns, contact log, and uncountable number of social networking tools all on the same homepage seemed more appealing than ever. And it was.

Would you believe me if i told you I haven't picked up the New York Times since the invention of the 'app'? That i haven't checked my email from a desktop computer, or written in my daily planner that still sits on my desk? My relationship with the media escalated over the last 8 months with the purchase of my smartphone. Twitter and facebook are now part of my daily life, and I respond to emails just as quickly as i do to text messages. Though the convenience of social interaction and communication plays both a positive and negative role, being 'connected' has changed my life, my knowledge and interests, and my perception of society. The extent in which media effects society today goes very underrated, and after immense study in the array of courses Hunter College has to offer, I hope to pursue a fine education in media studies.
